Ayah 5

Ayah 5

Surah Al-Mulk, Ayah 5

Reflection Questions:

1. What is the purpose of the creation of the stars? Allah could just create the sky without any stars. But He created stars to beautify the sky and also for other purposes for our benefit.
2. If every creation has a purpose, what about us? What is the purpose Allah created us? [Surah Adh-Dhaariyat, 51:56]
3. Ponder upon the fact that the stars are used to pelt the Syaitans and Allah have prepared for them punishment of the fire because of their disobedience.

Practical tips:

1. Stars should only be used for the purpose mentioned in the Qur’an (e.g. not for fortune telling, etc.)
2. How do we fulfill the purpose of our creation - what should we do?

As-Saffat 37:6-10

Surely We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment, the stars (6)

And (there is) a safeguard against every rebellious Shaitan (7)

They cannot listen to the exalted assembly and they are thrown at from every side (8)

Being driven off, and for them is a perpetual chastisement (9)

Except him who snatches off but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame (10)

Al-Bukhaari said in his Saheeh: Qutaadah said: “Allaah created these stars for three purposes: to adorn the heavens, to stone the devils and as signs by which to navigate. Whoever seeks anything else in them is mistaken and does not benefit from them, and he is wasting his time and effort in seeking something of which he has no knowledge.” (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Baab fi’l-Nujoom, 2/240)

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever learns anything of astrology has learned a branch of witchcraft (al-sihr)…
